DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Flo came to me with a country-esque pop song she had written during her time in Nashville. From the very first listen, it conjured such a strong visual world in my head that I immediately started calling it the ‘BARBIE BREAKUP FANTASY.’

I pitched the idea, and three weeks later, it became a reality.

I wanted to create a performance video that felt like stepping inside the glamorous, slightly surreal aftermath of a breakup — big emotions, big hair, big outfits, and absolutely no intention of wallowing quietly.

The visual world takes the familiar heartbreak of the song and turns it into something playful and heightened: a fantasy version of being alone where the sadness is still there, but so is the fun. Rather than simply depicting heartbreak, I wanted to embrace the theatricality of it — the kind of dramatic, over-the-top breakup fantasy you might have in your bedroom at 2am.

The video was produced in collaboration with the incredibly talented Milkcrate Collective and shot entirely inside Hopeless Romantic Books, a romance bookstore in Toronto. The space gave us the perfect backdrop for a world built around love stories — whilst allowing us to transform an everyday location into something much more heightened and cinematic.

And yes, that is my actual bed. And mattress.
